Date 2010-01-27 | Views  548

Each year across the world flowers, candy and gifts are exchanged between the lovers. All because of the St. Valentines day. But what is St.Valentine's day or who is the person and why do we celebrate this holiday? However the history of St. Valentine's day and its patron saint is a mystery. But we all know that  February is the month of romance and love. So who was that person about the St. Valentine's day and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When the emperor Claudius II. decided that single man made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men in his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's action actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other story suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape from the dungeons of Rome. Where they were often beaten and tortured in Roman prisons.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first "Valentine" greeting himself. While he was in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who may have been his prison guard's daughter who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter which he signed "From your Valentine" and this expression is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legend is not a real clear history. The stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and most importantly romantic figure. Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine's day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary or Valentine's death or burial which probably occurred around 280 A.C

Whatever the story is, we all do celebrate the day with all of our loving feelings and it is thanks to the Valentine's. That's the day we remember the good things like love, romance and sharing. That's the day reminds us how important to love be loved. Thanks a lot Valentine's but never forget, love is much better when you share it. You have to love to be loved. Happy St. Valentine's day for all of us.
